Nude with Flowering Branch

Nude with Flowering Branch by Gustave Courbet, 1863

Gustave Courbet was the bad boy of the 19th-century art world, refusing to paint idealized goddesses and instead focusing on real, fleshy humans. In this piece, a woman with vibrant red hair stretches casually against a backdrop of dark foliage, grasping a flowering branch above her head. Her pose feels unposed and natural, capturing a private moment rather than a mythological scene. This was a radical move for 1863, as the art establishment demanded nudes be disguised as Venus or Diana to be acceptable, but Courbet insisted on painting reality.
