Der Neophyt

Der Neophyt by Gustave Doré, 1875

Imagine being the new kid at a very strict, very old school—that's the vibe of Gustave Doré's 'Le néophyte' (The Neophyte). Created in 1875 for his travel book on Spain, this dramatic scene shows a young, pale novice monk sitting rigidly among a row of elderly, hooded figures who look more like ghouls than holy men. Doré, a French prodigy who started publishing illustrations at age 15, uses intense shading to cast deep shadows, making the older monks look menacing and emphasizing the isolation of the young convert. It’s a perfect example of Romanticism, turning a quiet religious moment into something intense and slightly spooky.
