Roger Embraced by Bradamante
Gustave Doré captures a rare moment of tenderness in this illustration for Ariosto’s epic poem *Orlando Furioso*. The fierce warrior maiden Bradamante stands tall in a flowing gown, gazing down as her beloved Roger rests his head wearily against her waist in a dense, tangled forest. It’s a beautiful contrast of strength and vulnerability, typical of Doré’s Romantic style. This French artist, who began publishing lithographs at the ripe old age of 15, was famous for bringing literary fantasies to life with his incredibly detailed, scratchy pen work.
