Gustave Doré, the master of dramatic illustration, brings a scene from Ludovico Ariosto's epic poem *Orlando Furioso* to life here. Three hulking, hunched giants trudge miserably down a path, tethered like beasts of burden to a majestic knight on horseback who holds a lance high. The knight leads his captives toward a distant, dreamlike castle while Doré's loose watercolor washes create a misty, atmospheric forest. This piece perfectly captures the Romantic era's love for the sublime, showing how even the mightiest monsters can be humbled by a hero's quest.
