O Corvo Pl.03
1884
Gustave Doré brings Edgar Allan Poe’s gothic masterpiece to life in this haunting wood engraving from 1883. We see the poem’s narrator, utterly exhausted, slumping over a table with a book in hand—trying to read away his grief for the lost Lenore. Beside him, bathed in the soft light of an oil lamp, a young girl (perhaps a ghostly memory of Lenore herself) looks on with wide, innocent eyes. The heavy shadows and intricate details capture the deep melancholy of the Romantic movement perfectly, visualizing the moment the narrator seeks 'surcease of sorrow' from his books.
