Der Rabe Pl.13
1884
Imagine sitting alone in your room, grieving a lost love, when suddenly a giant bird flies in and refuses to leave! That's the scene Gustave Doré illustrates here for Edgar Allan Poe's famous poem 'The Raven'. The narrator looks startled as the bird enters through the open shuttered window, a moment of high suspense before the bird utters its famous 'Nevermore'. Doré, a master of dramatic lighting and shadow, created these engravings shortly before his death; they were published in 1884 and helped cement the visual look of Poe's dark fantasy for generations.
