Lot’’s Elder Daughter by Hans Baldung, 1535-1540

Hans Baldung Grien brings a scandalous biblical tale to life with this bold depiction of Lot's elder daughter. She reclines provocatively on rich red sheets, having just seduced her father—seen in the background obliviously drinking from a goblet—to ensure their family's survival after fleeing their home. To the far right, the city of Sodom burns in a fiery apocalypse, creating a dramatic contrast with the intimate, almost voyeuristic foreground. Baldung was famous for his fascination with female sexuality and the macabre, making this a perfect example of his daring German Renaissance style.
