The Great St. Sebastian
1514
Hans Baldung Grien, a star pupil of Albrecht Dürer, created this dramatic woodcut of Saint Sebastian in 1514. Instead of the usual calm martyr pose, Sebastian is shown in a wildly contorted, almost dancing position, tied to a tree and pierced by arrows while angels hover in the swirling clouds above. The intense, swirling lines and the artist's 'HGB' monogram in the corner are classic hallmarks of the German Renaissance. Baldung was known for pushing boundaries, and here he turns a traditional religious scene into a dynamic, almost supernatural spectacle that feels more like a wild dream than a quiet prayer.
