Hans Baldung brings a dramatic, almost theatrical energy to this 1512 depiction of the Holy Trinity and the Mystic Pietà. Jesus, pale and bearing the wounds of the crucifixion, is supported by a grieving Mary and John the Evangelist, while God the Father and a dove representing the Holy Spirit hover above in stormy clouds. Below this divine scene, a group of donors kneels in prayer on a patch of green grass, looking up in awe. The vivid, almost glowing colors of the robes contrast sharply with the somber mood, a hallmark of Baldung's unique Northern Renaissance style.
