Abendmond in Kobe by Hashiguchi Goyō, 1920

Hashiguchi Goyō captures a serene twilight moment in Kobe with this stunning woodblock print, where a massive weeping willow tree dominates the foreground. Its dark, intricate branches—rendered with incredibly fine lines—reach out against a soft, gradient sky of blue and peach, framing a delicate crescent moon. Created in 1920, this piece belongs to the shin-hanga (new print) movement, a modernist revival of traditional Japanese woodblock printing that incorporated Western-style realism and atmospheric lighting. Tragically, Goyō died just a year later, making this atmospheric scene one of his final masterpieces.
