Dying Adonis
1609
Hendrick Goltzius really shows off his skills with perspective in this dramatic scene of the mythological hunter Adonis, lying lifeless after a fatal encounter with a wild boar. By using a diamond-shaped canvas, he forces your eye to travel from the large soles of Adonis's feet all the way up to his peaceful face, creating a dizzying, modern-looking camera angle. Notice the red poppies blooming near his hand and the spear resting by his side? These details hint at the violence of the hunt, while the flowers—symbols of eternal sleep—offer a poetic contrast to the bloody wound on his thigh. It’s a perfect example of Mannerism, a style that loved to twist traditional poses into something complex and emotionally intense.
