アルフレッド・ラ・ギーニュ
1894
Toulouse-Lautrec was the ultimate paparazzi of 1890s Paris, and this sketchy, vibrant scene proves it. The central figure, a man in a bowler hat (likely the artist's friend 'Alfred la Guigne'), stands with his back to us, immersed in the café chaos. To the right, a tall, elegant figure with a feathered hat and an impossibly long neck—classic Lautrec caricature—struts by, while a woman with a fur boa and heavy makeup stares out with a look of weary boredom. The raw cardboard background peeks through the loose, energetic brushstrokes, giving the piece an immediate, 'caught in the moment' feel that defined his Post-Impressionist documentation of Montmartre nightlife.
