At the Brasserie Hanneton
1898
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec captures the vibe of a late-night hangout at the famous Brasserie Hanneton in this lively sketch. The woman at the table is wearing a hat so massive and fluffy it looks like a cumulus cloud crashed into a tea party. She stares out with a look of bored elegance, a beer mug and bottle sitting lonely on the table before her. Lautrec was the paparazzi of his day, using quick, scratchy lines to document the real, unglamorous lives of Paris's bohemian crowd.
