Canards
1899
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is best known for his wild posters of Parisian nightlife, but this 1899 piece shows his quieter, observational side. Titled 'Canards' (French for ducks), the artwork features two ducks on the water—one swimming calmly while the other flaps its wings in the distance. It was created for a famous portfolio called 'L'Estampe originale,' which collected original prints from top artists of the time. The sketch-like quality captures the movement of the water and the birds perfectly, proving the artist had a keen eye for nature, not just the Moulin Rouge.
