Jane Avril Dancing by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, circa 1892

Jane Avril, the star dancer of the Moulin Rouge known as 'La Mélinite' (meaning 'explosive'), is caught mid-kick in this energetic 1892 piece by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. She balances on one leg, showing off her black stockings and the massive 'leg-of-mutton' sleeves that were all the rage in 1890s fashion. Lautrec was a devoted fan of the cabaret scene and a close friend of Jane, often capturing her snake-like dance moves with loose, scratchy brushstrokes. The spectators in the background watch from a box, placing us right in the middle of the vibrant Parisian nightlife.
