The Turkey
1899
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the king of Parisian nightlife posters, traded the cabaret for the barnyard in this 1899 illustration. Titled 'La Dinde' (The Turkey), the piece features a scruffy, hunched bird pecking at the ground, rendered with loose, energetic strokes that perfectly capture its awkward, comical posture. As a Post-Impressionist, Lautrec was a master of capturing character, and here he applies that skill to a humble farm animal. The vast empty space around the small sketch and the simple title text give the composition a surprisingly modern, minimalist feel.
