Boats on the Beach by Henri-Edmond Cross

Henri-Edmond Cross is usually the king of tiny, precise dots, but in this Post-Impressionist scene, he lets loose with bold, sweeping strokes to capture a battered boat resting on a purple-hued beach. The turbulent white waves crash against the dark hull while the sky churns with lavender clouds, showing the raw power of the Mediterranean coast he called home. This looser style was a huge shift for the artist later in his life and directly inspired his friend Henri Matisse to launch the wild Fauvist movement. It feels less like a scientific study of light and more like a vivid memory of a stormy day by the sea.
