Landscape with the Little Mauresque Mountains
1909
Henri-Edmond Cross mastered a technique where tiny dots of pure color are placed side-by-side to create a shimmering effect. In this 1909 landscape of the Maures mountains in southern France, he uses this method to capture the intense, vibrating light of the Mediterranean coast. Instead of mixing colors on a palette, he lets the viewer's eye blend the blues, oranges, and pinks, creating a dreamy, almost mosaic-like atmosphere. As a key figure in Post-Impressionism, Cross pushed the boundaries of how we perceive color, turning a simple valley scene into a radiant tapestry of light.
