Jazz – Title
1947
These bold, sweeping black strokes look less like letters and more like a musical performance, spelling out 'JAZZ' with a rhythmic energy that jumps off the page. This is the title page for Henri Matisse’s famous 1947 book, where he hand-wrote the text himself so the words would dance alongside his colorful cut-out illustrations. Matisse chose the title not just for the music, but because the improvisational arrangement of shapes reminded him of jazz rhythm. Created while he was bedridden and unable to paint traditionally, this project proved that creativity doesn't need a canvas—just a pair of scissors and a lot of imagination.
