Oceania, the Sky
1946
Henri Matisse created this dreamy, floating composition of white birds, coral, and seaweed against a warm beige backdrop during his final years, when illness confined him to bed. Unable to paint on a large scale, he invented his famous 'cut-out' technique, carving shapes from painted paper with scissors he affectionately called his 'brushes.' Originally designed to cover the walls of his studio in Vence, France, this piece transports viewers to a tranquil, imaginary ocean sky, proving that creativity has no limits.
