In Washingtons Zeit
1896
This vibrant 1896 poster for Harper's Magazine features a stoic George Washington in his military uniform, rendered in bold blues and yellows by the legendary illustrator Howard Pyle. While Pyle is famous for his swashbuckling pirate tales, here he brings a dignified touch to the first president. The text reveals a fascinating historical crossover: it advertises a series called 'In Washington's Day' written by Woodrow Wilson, decades before he became the 28th U.S. President! It's a perfect snapshot of the Golden Age of Illustration, where top-tier art was used to sell serialized history to the masses.
