The Fire of Rome
1785
Hubert Robert, nicknamed 'Robert of the Ruins,' brings a theatrical flair to this catastrophic scene of the Great Fire of Rome. Through the massive stone arch of a bridge, a raging inferno illuminates the night sky, casting an eerie orange glow on the classical architecture beyond while figures scramble in the shadows below. Painted in 1785, it captures the Romantic fascination with the sublime—terror and beauty mixed together. Interestingly, Robert was later imprisoned during the French Revolution and narrowly escaped the guillotine, so he certainly understood the chaos of collapsing empires!
