Vaulted Staircase by Hubert Robert, c. 1770-79

Hubert Robert was so obsessed with architecture and ruins that he earned the nickname 'Robert of the Ruins,' and this sketch perfectly captures his magic. Using warm, sepia washes, he turns a grand staircase into a monumental, almost dreamlike space where tiny figures look like ants scurrying about. The light flooding down from the top creates a dramatic stage, inviting you to imagine the conversations happening on those landings centuries ago. It’s a beautiful example of how he blended realistic observation with a romantic sense of scale.
