The Wounded Angel
1903
Two solemn boys trudge across a barren landscape carrying a wounded angel on a makeshift wooden stretcher. Dressed in pristine white with a bandaged head, the angel clutches a delicate bunch of snowdrops—a symbol of hope and spring—while her rescuers look anything but cheerful. Hugo Simberg painted this Symbolist masterpiece in 1903 shortly after recovering from a life-threatening illness, making the scene a deeply personal metaphor for survival. Voted Finland's favorite painting in 2006, it remains a hauntingly beautiful reminder that even angels need a little help sometimes.
