Quercia abbattuta
1890s
Shishkin was basically the ultimate forest nerd of the 19th century, spending hours sketching every single leaf and branch to get the details just right. In this scene, he captures the quiet drama of a fallen oak tree, its moss-covered roots twisting like giant muscles against the forest floor. Even though the giant tree is down, the surrounding woods feel incredibly alive, with dappled sunlight filtering through the dense canopy above. It's a perfect example of Russian Realism, where nature isn't just a pretty backdrop, but the main character of the story.
