Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky
1870
While Ivan Aivazovsky is legendary for painting stormy seas, this 1870 masterpiece shows he was just as magical with moonlight on land. A glowing full moon pierces the dark clouds, illuminating a rustic thatched cottage and a lonely windmill in the distance. In the foreground, a group of travelers and their livestock quietly cross the water, bathed in the eerie, beautiful light. It’s a perfect example of Romanticism, capturing the mysterious beauty of nature at night. Fun fact: Aivazovsky was incredibly prolific, creating over 6,000 paintings in his lifetime, yet he rarely sold them, preferring to gift them to friends and museums!
