Forest Landscape
ca. 1650
Jacob van Ruisdael was the ultimate master of the moody Dutch landscape, and this 1650 masterpiece proves it. Look at those massive, brooding clouds looming over the dark, tangled forest—they take up half the canvas just to show off his incredible skill at capturing the weather. Down below, a few sheep wander along a muddy track past a fallen log, reminding us that nature is always in a cycle of growth and decay. It's a perfect snapshot of the Baroque era's love for dramatic, emotional scenery.
