View of Grainfields with a Distant Town
circa 1670
Jacob van Ruisdael was the master of making the Dutch sky look like a blockbuster movie, dedicating nearly two-thirds of this canvas to massive, billowing clouds. Down below, the landscape is surprisingly hilly for the famously flat Netherlands—Ruisdael often exaggerated the dunes around Haarlem to add drama. A tiny traveler and his dog wander past fields of grain, some cut into neat sheaves, while a church spire peeks out from the horizon. It’s a perfect snapshot of the Dutch Golden Age, where nature was vast, powerful, and slightly intimidating.
