Mary with the Child, Venerated by St. Marc and St. Luke
before 1570
Tintoretto throws us right into a heavenly drama with this swirling scene of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus floating on a crescent moon, flanked by chubby angels. Below them, two muscular saints—St. Mark with his lion and St. Luke with his ox—gaze upward in awe, clutching their holy books. The artist's signature Mannerist style is on full display here, with those impossibly dynamic poses and intense, almost theatrical lighting that makes the figures pop against the stormy blue clouds. It's less of a peaceful religious scene and more like a divine superhero landing!
