Neptun und Amphitrite
1516
Jan Gossaert brought a taste of Italy back to the Netherlands with this striking pair of mythological lovers standing in a classical temple. Neptune grips his trident while his bride Amphitrite leans in affectionately, though he sports a modest fig-leaf branch—a nod to Northern sensibilities about nudity. This 1516 masterpiece is a prime example of the 'Romanist' style, where Northern artists copied Italian techniques like realistic anatomy and ancient architecture. The Latin inscription at the bottom is Gossaert proudly signing and dating his work, showing off his new skills.
