The Crucifixion by Jan Provost, ca. 1495

Jan Provost pulls a clever visual trick here: he takes the ultimate biblical tragedy and plops it right into a 15th-century Flemish neighborhood. Instead of ancient Jerusalem, the background is a bustling city with fancy gates and curious onlookers, making the sacred story feel surprisingly local and immediate. While the mourners at the bottom are draped in incredibly rich, heavy fabrics that show off the artist's mastery of light, the city behind them goes about its business, creating a striking contrast between divine suffering and everyday life.
