The merry homecoming (1670 - 1679) 2
Jan Steen brings the party right to the riverbank in this chaotic Baroque masterpiece. A boat has just docked, and it's absolute pandemonium: a woman is passionately kissing a traveler, a man tips his hat in greeting, and a boy plays a flute while another hangs precariously over the edge to scoop up water. In the background, people spill out of a tavern to join the fun, while a mother calmly breastfeeds her baby amidst the madness. Steen was famous for these lively, crowded scenes that often hid moral warnings about the dangers of excess—though honestly, it just looks like a really good time.
