Dune Landscape
ca. 1632
Jan van Goyen lets the sky steal the show in this moody Dutch scene, filling most of the view with billowing, dramatic clouds that dwarf the tiny figures below. On the sandy path, a woman balancing a basket on her head pauses with companions by a rickety wooden fence, capturing a quiet, everyday moment. This is a classic example of 'tonal' landscape painting, where Van Goyen used a limited palette of earthy browns and greens to create a hazy, atmospheric depth. Fun fact: despite being one of the most prolific landscape painters of the Dutch Golden Age with over 1,000 works to his name, Van Goyen actually went bankrupt speculating on tulip bulbs!
