Jan van Goyen was a master of the 'tonal landscape,' a style where the whole scene is bathed in a unified, monochromatic haze of earthy browns and golds. Here, a massive, cloud-filled sky dominates the view, looming over a busy river where fishermen and sailors hustle about their day. A sturdy brick sentry post stands guard on the bank, a quiet witness to the maritime traffic. Despite creating over a thousand paintings, Van Goyen died bankrupt, likely due to bad investments in the famous Dutch tulip mania!
