Selbstporträt
1864-1865
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres painted this self-portrait around the age of 80, looking every bit the stern grandmaster of French art. He’s decked out in his Legion of Honor medals, including a shiny star on his lapel, showing off the high status he fought so hard to achieve. If you look closely at the top right, he even inscribed a dedication to the library of Antwerp, gifting this piece to the city. Despite his famous hatred for the messy, emotional Romantic painters of his time, his own style here is incredibly smooth and precise—a perfect example of his lifelong Neoclassical devotion.
