Macbeth, Landscape

Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot

1858 - 1859

Macbeth, Landscape by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, 1858 - 1859

Corot painted this moody, atmospheric scene inspired by Shakespeare's Macbeth, showing the three witches greeting Macbeth and Banquo on a desolate heath. Though painted in 1859, its loose brushwork and focus on light and shadow actually paved the way for the Impressionists, who worshipped Corot as a master. The dark, brooding forest takes up most of the canvas, creating a sense of foreboding that perfectly matches the play's dark themes. It hangs in the Louvre today, a favorite among artists who admired his ability to capture the poetry of nature.
