Waterfall at Terni
1826
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot captured the roaring energy of the famous Cascata delle Marmore during his Italian travels in 1826. Unlike his polished studio masterpieces, this piece feels like a breath of fresh air, likely painted quickly outdoors to catch the fleeting light on the rushing water. You can almost hear the splash as the white cascade tumbles over the dark, rugged rocks, surrounded by dense, shadowy foliage that frames the scene perfectly. It's a fantastic example of how Corot's loose, spontaneous style actually paved the way for the Impressionist movement that would explode decades later.
