The Communion
1860
Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux is best known as a sculptor—famous for the dancing figures at the Paris Opera—so this piece offers a rare glimpse into his 2D work. Created in 1860, it depicts a solemn communion scene where a figure in bright white stands out against a sea of dark, shadowy congregants. Although part of the Academic movement, the loose, sketch-like brushwork feels surprisingly modern and energetic. It captures the spiritual atmosphere perfectly, feeling like we are peeking into a dimly lit church with a divine spotlight on the central ritual.
