The Confidence by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, 1873

Best known for his grand marble sculptures, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux reveals a much rawer, more intimate side in this expressive sketch. Two pale figures huddle closely together, emerging from a swirling vortex of dark, muddy browns as if sharing a whispered secret in the shadows. The rapid, almost frantic brushstrokes give the scene a sense of urgency and raw emotion, completely ditching the polished perfection expected of academic art in 1873. It feels like we've accidentally stumbled upon a private, vulnerable moment frozen in time.
