Portret van de vicomte Simon de Montfort
1841-1898
Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, primarily celebrated as a sculptor, brings a sculptor's eye for form to this portrait of the Vicomte Simon de Montfort. The painting is surprisingly loose and sketch-like, with rapid brushstrokes defining the Vicomte's mustache and receding hairline against a dark, murky background. Instead of a polished Academic finish, the face is built from patches of pink, white, and ochre, giving the subject a lively, almost restless presence that hints at Carpeaux's famous energetic style.
