Women Bathing 2
Jean-Léon Gérôme invites us into a sun-drenched, quiet moment inside a luxurious bathhouse, likely a Turkish hammam. In the foreground, a woman sits on a large wicker basket, casually washing her leg with soap, while another woman in the pool below gazes up at her. Sunlight streams through high arches, illuminating the marble floors and the various women chatting or soaking in the background. Gérôme was a master of the Academic style, famous for his 'licked finish' where brushstrokes are invisible and skin looks like polished marble; these 'Orientalist' scenes were a clever loophole for 19th-century artists to paint nudes under the guise of historical documentation.
