Le Marabout in the Harem bath

Jean-Léon Gérôme

Le Marabout in the Harem bath by Jean-Léon Gérôme

Jean-Léon Gérôme, a leader of the Academic art movement, crashes a ladies-only bathhouse with a giant, awkward stork. In this Orientalist fantasy, nude women lounge by a tiled pool, looking amused as the large bird—called a 'marabout' in French—wades into the water. Gérôme was famous for painting exotic Middle Eastern scenes for Western audiences, even though men were forbidden from real harems, meaning he was essentially painting a male fantasy. The bird is a clever visual pun: storks are famous for delivering babies, so its presence here is a cheeky nod to the harem's main job of producing heirs.
