The First Kiss of the Sun
1886
Jean-Léon Gérôme was a master of freezing time, and here he captures the precise second dawn breaks over the Giza plateau. While the foreground camp—with its slumbering camels and dark tents—sits in a cool, misty blue shadow, the pyramid peaks are suddenly ignited with a warm, pink glow. This hyper-realistic approach was typical of the Academic art movement, which loved dramatic lighting and exotic locations. Gérôme traveled extensively in Egypt to get his details right, though critics sometimes argued his scenes looked a bit too much like polished theater sets rather than real life.
