The Saddle Bazaar, Cairo
1883
Jean-Léon Gérôme was essentially the travel vlogger of the 19th century, journeying to Egypt to capture 'authentic' scenes for European audiences obsessed with the exotic. Here, a striking white horse with a fiery orange tail stands patiently, showing off a jewel-encrusted saddle while its handler negotiates with a bearded shopkeeper. This piece is a prime example of Academic art and Orientalism, movements that romanticized the Middle East with hyper-realistic detail. Gérôme was a stickler for accuracy, often sketching on location, though he certainly polished the lighting to make that horse glow against the dusty architecture.
