Vreugde van het vissen, handrol 30x200, Metropolitan Museum
Unrolling this handscroll reveals a serene, misty landscape where rugged mountains fade into a calm river, perfectly capturing the literati dream of escaping society. The bold calligraphy on the right identifies it as the 'Fishermen's Joy' by the legendary master Jing Hao, authenticated by the famous Ming dynasty critic Dong Qichang. Interestingly, while the label calls him a Northern Song painter, Jing Hao actually lived during the earlier Five Dynasties period! The composition uses vast empty spaces to suggest water and mist, inviting the viewer to mentally wander into this peaceful fishing spot.
