Dopo il bagno, Valencia by Joaquín Sorolla, 1909

Joaquín Sorolla captures the blinding Mediterranean sun in this breezy beach scene, where two women dry off after a swim. The woman on the left wraps herself in a billowing pink towel, while her companion dries her arm in a tan wrap, both bathed in brilliant, dappled light. Sorolla, the master of Spanish Luminism, was obsessed with capturing the fleeting effects of sunlight on water and skin. You can almost feel the sea breeze rustling the fabric and the warmth of the 1909 Valencia sun just by looking at the bold, energetic brushstrokes.
