Boats in a harbour
Joaquín Sorolla, often called the 'painter of light,' captures a harbor scene here in 1887, just before he fully embraced the dazzling Luminism he's famous for. Two towering sailing ships with dark hulls and intricate rigging dominate the center, their masts reaching up into a hazy, white sky. Around them, smaller boats bustle with tiny figures, their red and blue colors popping against the pale, mint-green water. The loose, energetic brushstrokes give the water a shimmering, almost liquid feel, showing Sorolla's early mastery of marine atmosphere.
