Sorolla captures an intense moment of scientific discovery, depicting the neuropathologist Dr. Luis Simarro and his colleagues huddled around a workbench in a Madrid laboratory. The warm, focused glow of a hanging lamp illuminates a cluttered table of chemical bottles and microscopes, contrasting sharply with the shadowy, eager faces of the men standing behind. Although Sorolla is famous for his 'Luminism' and sun-drenched beach scenes, this 1897 masterpiece shows his darker, more realistic early style. It actually won a major prize at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, proving he could master serious intellectual subjects just as well as light and water.
