Abstract design
Joaquín Torres-García created a visual puzzle here, filling a grid with cryptic symbols like fish, vases, and ancient-looking glyphs. This style, known as Universal Constructivism, was his attempt to create a universal language by blending geometric grids with symbols from ancient cultures. He famously argued that 'Our North is the South,' literally flipping the map of the Americas to challenge European artistic dominance. The initials 'J.T.G.' in the bottom corner mark this as one of his many coded messages, likely created during his time leading the famous Torres García Workshop in Montevideo.
