1928
Joaquín Torres-García essentially painted his famous wooden toys in this charming 1928 scene. The couple stands stiffly side-by-side, looking more like handcrafted puppets than real people, with their blocky shapes and simple, doll-like faces. This unique style was born out of necessity; while living in Paris, Torres-García carved wooden toys to support his family, and those geometric forms eventually took over his canvas work. It’s a wonderful example of how everyday struggles can lead to a completely new, playful artistic language.
